The world is full of myriad opinions at the moment. Everything from Covid to Black Lives Matter elicit different points of view. Some of which are articulated in an extremely hostile manner. Nobody seems to be considering the fact that both sides of any argument could be correct, at least about something.
Alas, we seem to be living in a world where if a person says something you disagree with, then they must be full of shit about everything else too. Sorry about the language, but only that truly expresses the rage which you often see. The problem is that when we take sides we seem to assume that there are only two. But this is not a war between countries, or a sport, and this is not a two-dimensional world. Would you want it to be?
Of course, we also have our own pre-conceived ideas to contend with. So many of us seem unable to listen to what others are really saying, instead we hear what we think they mean. Listen to the words “Black Lives Matter”. There is no “only” in that sentence, so no need to change a non-existent word to “all”. This is simply the most obvious example that I keep seeing in the world right now, but this way of thinking is by no means restricted to that particular topic.
Perhaps the only solution is to be alert to our own reactions, awareness is key. As well as slowing down. Information flies from one side of the world to the other, just because we have that ability does not mean we have to use it though. “With great power comes great responsibility,” said good old Uncle Ben. How we use the power that the modern world gives us is a question that we must all answer for ourselves. Taking a breath, thinking, checking facts as well as our own prejudices, could do wonders for both our blood pressure and nerves. You never know, we might even learn something from one another at the same time.
