What Lies Beyond?

The fascination of a locked door. If you could only gain access, what wonders would you find? Perhaps a hidden world of machinery, maybe simply a bare empty room. There could be steps leading up or down to other levels of mystery.

Now and Then

Sitting on one end of a wet, empty bench. Looking along a line of uneven slats which are wavering towards the horizon. Today they are deserted but I can’t help but wonder what life they have seen. How many conversations have been had? Relationships will have been started and ended in these spots. Fun will have been had. Everything from secretive teenage drinking to classical recitals, for the more mature, will have taken place here. Even if these are no longer the original benches, then the ghosts of these past events will still linger on.

Reflecting

A sunny day changes perspectives in so many ways. Warming rays give us energy, stiff bones becomes loose again. Dark moods melt away and are replaced by optimism and joy.

Our points of view are changed in so many ways. Previously boring, bland buildings, can become shining rays of light. It’s all in the angle, and the opening of the eyes and mind. Raise your head and look, it’s amazing what you can see.

Awareness

Look, listen, touch, taste and think. Be aware and present. It’s easier said than done, but if we don’t try we will never get there. Presence is a problem for me, there are often too many thoughts competing for space.

The one time I truly feel present and aware is when I am out walking and photographing. Looking for details, of buildings, of nature, of life. And occasionally you see something intriguing which sparks your imagination.

What is that across the river? Is it art, or something else? Is it just an inlet, or a passage to another world? And, before you know it, maybe you can enter that world, in your imagination. And a story begins.

Atmosphere

Every venture into nature, at this time of year, seems to plunge you into a different world. Even a short walk next to the river, literally five minutes from my home, can provide peace and tranquility. So easy to escape the city and find space.

Many days are cloudy, but that only increases the interest. Golden leaves lie everywhere, and when the mist descends the atmosphere is incredible.

It is amazing how, when I am walking and looking around me, I feel safe and contented. But, while looking through my camera lens, everything looks like a potential scene from a horror movie. People look as if they are walking to their doom and buildings appear to be deserted. That is why I love this time of year, there are just so many possibilities.

And soon the snow will come, bringing with it different feelings and different possibilities. Sometimes chilled to the bone, scraping ice off the windscreen. Sometimes hot and sweaty, chasing the children and throwing snowballs. Both scenes will be captured through my lens.
